One thing I have learned from my endless YouTube binges it is the importance of skincare. Up until about a year ago, I rarely (if ever) washed my face with more than a face wipe or water. But suddenly 24 hits you and you realize if you don’t smarten up soon you will have a face full of wrinkles and a full head of grey hair. Also, I experienced adult acne in ways that my teenage self never would have imagined. Most of my friends do not feel sorry for me because this only means that I have a few pimples on my chin but that can be scarring when you are not used to having anything on your skin.
Since there may be a few people in the world out there like me who have little to no understanding of skincare products, their purpose or where to start – I figured I’d share what I have been doing lately to encourage my body to be more Benjamin Button than a greying grandma.
Step 1: Cleanser. Cleansing your face is recommended in order to remove make-up, dead skin cells, oil, dirt and other types of pollutant from the skin of the face. I use a two-step system to cleanse my face on an everyday basis. First, I wipe off my makeup with Simple Skincare Cleansing Facial Wipes and follow up with the Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Foaming Cleanser. Tea tree oil is highly recommended for blemish-prone skin because it reduces oiliness and shine. The full Tea Tree Body Shop line is mild which is perfect for my sensitive skin.
Step 2: Toner. Generally toner is a lotion or wash designed to cleanse the skin and shrink the appearance of pores, usually on the face. I follow up the cleansing of my skin with the toner from the same line. The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Oil Skin Clearing Mattifying Facial Toner (say that ten times fast) removes residual make-up and impurities on the skin. I apply this to the skin from a cotton pad.
Step 3: Serum. This skincare product can be applied to your skin after cleansing but before moisturizing with the intent of delivering powerful ingredients directly to the skin. The Drops of Youth Youth Concentrate Serum is my favourite part of my skin routine. The Body Shop employee that recommended this to me promised incredible results including tightened pores, removal of acne scaring, smooth lines and luminous skin. Who would say no to that? I find the scent to be amazing and I generally feel a freshness to my skin as soon as I apply the serum.
Step 4: Moisturizer. The final step of your routine should be to add moisture back into the skin. Moisturizer is a complex mixture of chemical agents specifically designed to make the external layers of the skin softer and more pliable. The Body Shop’s Seaweed Oil-Control Mattifying Gel Day Cream is easily absorbed, non-clogging, oil-free and hydrating. The seaweed products are great for combination to oily skin types. The fresh smelling cream leaves skin feeling clean and soft long after application.
