Here’s a confession for you – I am having a serious beauty phase right now. It all started a few weeks ago when I was at my local Shoppers to pick up some face masks (read: necessities) and the cosmetics employee let me know that they just got their first shipment of NYX (a brand my favourite YouTubers mention ALL the time). Naturally, I picked up three of the soft matte lip creams and Covergirl’s new Plumpify BlastPRO before heading home. Once I arrived at home, I tested out the lip colours which then lead to me giving a few YouTube style “what’s in my makeup bag” video talks to my bathroom mirror for over 45 minutes.
Given this newfound love of testing products and really starting to understand the difference between the products I LOVE and ones I would replace, I have decided it is time to share my findings on the blog in my first beauty post.
In an attempt to save money, I have been more inclined to shop drugstore products lately. Which feels like the perfect place to start my beauty blogging endeavours! So without further ado, here is a collection of recent drugstore hauls (including a couple from my mom’s makeup bag) and my thoughts after the first few uses.
Maybelline Eye Studio Master Precise Ink Pen Eyeliner in Black
I have been using Revlon eyeliner for years. I started with the Liquid Colourstay eyeliner and then moved on to Colorstay Liquid Eye Pen after trying out the Stila pen at Krista’s. The store was SOLD OUT of my usual pencil so I opted for Maybelline’s new ink pen liner. To me, this looks like it could be a drugstore dupe for the Kat von D Tattoo liner. I was a bit off my game after going through a non-liner phase lately but once I got my technique down I fell in love with this product. The pigment on the product is really strong and lasts all day. Everytime I have worn this liner someone has asked me if I am wearing falsh lashes. The felt pen shape is great because it gives the opportunity to have a very thin line in the inner eye and a thick line without having to build. After some more practice, I think this will be a great essential in my makeup bag!
NYX Micro Brow Pencil in Chocolate
I 100% picked this up because it reminded me of the Anastasia Brow Wiz pencil. Even though I’m not looking to replace my Dipbrow Pomeade, I’m always looking for easy brow for quick makeup mornings. This pencil comes with a spool on one end and a very small brow pencil on the other. It is really easy to use and a great way to build shape naturally. Because it is so small, I feel like it takes a bit longer to use to make a perfect brow so I’m not sure I would use it every day. On the days that I really want my brows to stand out and be #goals, I will definitely give this a shot.
Revlon Not Just Nudes Palette in Passionate Nudes
This was a steal from my mom’s makeup bag annnnd I gave it back to her. When I first saw my mom using this I was really excited to find drugstore brands attempting palettes like the Urban Decay Naked palettes that I love. Let’s be honest, no one wants to pay that much money for a palette. However after testing this palette out, I am happy that I have invested in my Naked palette because this is definitely just an attempt. The pigment of the shadows in this set are not good. The palette might be great for someone like my mom who barely needs makeup and is looking for something new and fun but I would not recommend buying this.
Covergirl Plumpify BlastPRO in Very Black
As I said in my February Favourites, I am really feeling this mascara. I’ve always been a fan of Lashblast but this new mascara is OFF THE CHAIN. The brush gives both added volume and length (the biggest win of a mascara!) The end is curved which allows you to get hairs you may not usually be able to reach (i.e. inner lashes if you are like me). The only downfall I have found in this mascara is that I hate having to remove waterproof mascara. If you have found a secret way to remove waterproof, please let me know below. That being said, I love to wear it to the gym because it never comes off.
Essence Get BIG Lashes Volume Boost Mascara
The claims of “maximum volume and especially thick lashes” on the packaging are no joke. Pricewise this mascara is amazing. I think I paid around $3 for this mascara which is insane compared to my usual prices. The huge brush does a great job to create volume on your lashes without feeling very heavy and weighed down. I love it for everyday use because it lets me keep my more expensive mascara for nights out or days when I really want the focus on my lashes.
L’oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara
My mom has worn L’oreal mascara forever. It is by far my most used drugstore brand mascara. This mascara has a much sleeker brush than the Covergirl and Essence mascaras above. I love this mascara for building lashes up without having to deal with clumping. If you are looking for defined and lengthened lashes, this would be my number one drugstore recommendation.
L’oreal Paris True Match LUMI in Porcelain/Light Ivory
I’ve never really been a liquid foundation kind of a person. Luckily, I have had pretty good skin my whole life but I’ve found that there are certain times of the month (lol) that my chin starts to get really irritated and starts looking a little worse for wear. On those days, concealer and a bit of BB Cream just don’t seem to be enough so I decided to go to well-trusted L’oreal for my first foundation. I really don’t like that there isn’t much of an opportunity to test foundations at the drugstore – it makes me a little nervous but I guessed my best. The new LUMI True Match boasts illumination, unification and improvement of the skin for a healthy looking complexion through the use of Vitamin C&E and SPF 20. It feels really light on the skin which is great for me since I am not used to wearing heavy makeup on my face. Unfortunately, the shade is awkwardly to light for my skin tone but I have been mixing it with the BB cream below and contouring to even everything out.
L’oreal Paris Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream in Fair
This BB Cream was also a part of my February Favourites. I am already on my second bottle of this stuff. The first bottle lasted me three months which I found really impressive for the size of the tube. The BB cream claims to prime, perfect, hydrate and correct which I think it does. I don’t know if I would recommend this for anyone with skin issues but for days where I feel like I need a little bit more than concealer this is perfect for me. It is also really cool because it comes out white and then the “beautifying beads” transform the shade.
Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lip Color in Devotion and Addiction
So I’m going to be honest with you, when I first bought these I really didn’t love them. The colours are pretty and they smell nice but I found them to be a little streaky and thought they looked better swatched then on my lips. But then, my girl Estee (not really my girl but I pretend we are friends because I watch her YouTube videos religiously) had them in her favourites so I decided to give them another try. I wore Devotion (a pinky shade) to work on Monday and I loved it. First of all, I got a ton of compliments which was nice because pinky tones aren’t usually a comfortable choice for me. The lip colour lasted all day which is impressive considering the fact that I drink water and tea all day long. When it did fade, it looked really nice and not streaky. This purchase is proof to never count things out on the first try or never judge a book by its cover as they say.
NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Prague, Stockholm and Istanbul
I had the opposite reaction to these lip colours. At first, I really loved them (probably because they were my first liquid lip colour) but I’m not a huge fan anymore. They have a bit of a weird smell that is also good, you know the kind I’m talking about? The colour definitely is matte and lasts a long time. I find that they dry my lips out a bit more than the Revlon Ultra but it’s all liveable and to be expected from matte colours. Stockholm, the “midtone beige pink” is by far my favourite colour of the three for right now because it is useable for . Prague is a merlot shade that I will definitely be using on night’s out. Istanbul is a “clean pink” that I think will look really cute in the summer time when my skin is more tanned.
